Brought to you by: American Bakers Association, American Frozen Food Institute, Chilled Food Association, Consumer Brands Association (formerly GMA), FMI, National Chicken Council, National Turkey Federation, North American Meat Institute, Peanut and Tree Nut Processors, Produce Marketing Association, United Fresh Produce Association, U.S. Poultry and Egg Association and Western Growers Association.

Whole genome sequencing (WGS) is now commonplace technology in food regulatory agencies. Food and environmental samples are routinely analyzed using WGS techniques. Dr. Eric Brown, the Director of Microbiology at FDA, will discuss the impact of WGS analysis toward their public health efforts, not only in outbreak investigations but also in routine monitoring and surveillance programs. This presentation will share information on how the transition to WGS methods has enhanced the ability of public health agencies to respond to risks associated with food pathogens and prevent foodborne illnesses and outbreaks.

WITH
SCIENCE.

This series contains five different webinar topics surrounding Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) occurring once a month from January to May of 2020. WGS is an increasingly valuable tool with a broad scope of applications from food safety management and surveillance to outbreak investigations. The series starts by exploring the basics of whole genome sequencing and how this tool applies to food safety management. In later months, the topic will evolve into sequencing protocols, case studies, regulatory applications and novel applications of the next generation of whole genome sequencing such as metagenomics.
